Why is PETA not against Eid-al-adha (bakrid)? Why does PETA not rise against Bakra-Eid? Why does PETA want to ban Jallikattu and not Bakrid? Why is PETA silent on Bakrid in which lakhs of animals are murdered?
Well, yes! PETA does rise against bakra-eid or any festival of that kind that support animal sacrifice. Even many of the Muslims also support the idea of not killing animals.
And of course, it's not only hard but impossible to justify killing, either it be of any living being. I won't be justifying it rather I'll be trying to focus on the reasons, in which, I hope, you may find relevance.
Since it's religiously followed, it's always a critical concern to raise. And this is not because public is inhumane towards animals but because my faith teaches something other than not killing.
What's the visualization if you see thousands of animals getting killed?
It's simple! This religion teaches no mercy. Muslims are heartless and brutal. Isn't it?
Well, yes this act of sacrifice makes them appear to be.
But I would like to share the reasons behind the sacrifices which are rarely known:
- Minimum of one-third of the sacrificed flesh needs to be distributed among needy/poor/hungry and other one-third needs to be distributed among relatives. And rest is yours, eat and share with whomsoever you want.
So, here... there is no blind Faith that the blood reaches to Allah or Allah needs animals. No he doesn't need to be fed. It's for the benefit of the human society only.
- It's remembrance of Ibrahim a.s. who agreed to sacrifice his son (Ismael) on the commandment of Allah and later his son was replaced by a sheep/goat.
So, here it's Thankfulness & Taqwa (consciousness, Love and fear of the unseen i.e. Allah). We can not just preach and boast about how strong we're in our faith. We need to express it, by investing our wealth for Allah who has bestowed on us every kind of wealth.
Until you have a heart to put knife on neck of an animal you know is loving, innocent like Ismael, you won't know what it takes to appreciate the Creator through an action. So, this is a dedicated festival to show that and it's not done with animals who are becoming endangered or are on the urge of extinction. Balance is maintained.
That was an attempt and effort to try to make you understand Pankaj Jain. But still, this topic is open to much argument like moral permissibility, health concerns, ecosystem balance etc., and that's perfectly fine to disagree because to everyone their concerns are more important and to me, my Taqwa.
PETA has its own belief system on Animals. Islam has its own belief system on Animals. One cannot impose their belief system on others.
Islam has more followers and Governments than PETA.
Islam doesn’t mandate what to eat, but guide them what not to eat, whereas PETA does impose what not to eat.
People usually don’t want someone to impose what to eat or what not to eat. It’s individual choice. PETA has no right to intervene in personal freedom.
Why PETA is trying to stop Jallikattu? The answer to this question can only be given by PETA alone. As they call themselves, ‘People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals’, by name it suggests that, this group is trying to protect animal rights. They are an NGO formed in USA in the year 1980. Slowly they spread their legs around the world in association with animal interest protectors. All over the world PETA aims in freeing animals from clutches of human troubles.
While the intention of PETA is not questionable, the purpose remains on the darker side. Not only in India, also in other parts of the world, PETA involves themselves in activities that are against the trades, entertainment events, research projects, etc. that involve animals in them.
Humans, as we evolved, moved on top of animal chain, by harnessing the environment and nature, which also involved animals to a major extent. The relationship between humans and animals go very deep, than we all actually know it. It must be seen that in the prospect of nature, human and animals share the same genus. It's only natural for humans to control the environment (which includes animals) in which they live, in order to protect themselves from the threats of nature. So the connection with animals must always exist, for us to be a part of this world. Indulging in sports that could endanger an animal's life, is what people were involved in, but not predominantly. There were, and are, sports which involve animals without posing any threat to their existence. Back in time, it was common for us to put an animal life in risk as a result of our acts. Even back in time, lives of humans were threatened by animals. Man later understood nature and learned to live apart from wilderness, leaving alone the wild to their own choice. Still a life without animals wasn't possible and started to domesticate animals and ever since, have been dependent on them for life.
In this process man understood harming of animals are to be not done and acted accordingly. We also established organizations like red cross to protect animal lives.
PETA too, if established for a similar purpose must understand the natural process, and try to assist the harmonious existence of animals and humans, and make sure the safety of animals are protected.
Rather the acts of PETA are resembling activities that could destroy the cultural and traditional values of a society. While ensuring animal interests, PETA mustn't forget to uphold people's interests.
The corporates are definitely trying to use this as a cue to achieve their immoral whims, which is quite obvious.
Coming to the issue of Jallikattu, it must be understood that animals are not harmed, rather various breeds of South Indian bulls are protected. The scientific benefits, behind Jallikattu, which could only do too good to humans must be looked into and understood. On the name of animal interests, human values mustn't be left behind. PETA can't live in this world without animals around it. Animals are innate part of our living and Jallikattu doesn't threaten animals, rather without Jallikattu we become vulnerable to greed of few corporate thugs.
Where a tiger comes out of the jungle and attacks a man, will PETA sacrifice the man or the tiger?
If at all the intentions of PETA are genuine, then they should understand the reality, but on the other hand if PETA is trying to play corporate games under the name of goodness, eventually they would get crushed under the wheels of youth power.

They kill healthy Animals ruthlessly! And ironically, the World knows them as the Care-takers of Animals! They grab this fake image by investing billions of dollars on publicity! In return, they pluck enormous Donations globally! Yes, you guessed it right! They are PETA, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, Animal Killers disguised as Saviors! Funnily enough, nowadays they have been in the Social Media glare for their Anti-Hinduism stand against Jallikattu as Cruelty towards Animals.

While they are having a gala time attacking Hindu Cultures and traditions, here is one rarest of rare moment of PETA when they ventured to advise Muslims to refrain from Animal Cruelty. The Muslims gave PETA a crystal clear message to not to poke their nose ever again in Islamic Cultures and traditions!
In 2013, a PETA Volunteer called Benazir Suraiya had appealed to her Muslim kin folks to abstain from Animal Slaughter on Eid-al-Adha. Popularly known as Bakra Eid, the festival involves the Mass slaughter of Cows, Buffaloes, Sheep, Goats, Camels etc in the MOST UNSCIENTIFIC WAY as a part of Sacrifice offered to Allah! The gesture by Benazir Suraiya to stop the barbarous way of Celebration of the Festival was indeed noble!
A few excerpts of Benazir Suraiya’s post on PETA website:
“As a Muslim and a vegan, I celebrate Eid al-Adha, the Festival of Sacrifice, by submitting my ego and my individual will to Allah – that is all that is required by the Qur’an.
Cruelty to animals is discouraged in Islam – and the ways in which cows, sheep, goats and other animals are raised, handled, transported and slaughtered for food are inherently cruel. According to the Holy Prophet Muhammad, those who are kind to every living being will receive an estimable reward.”

Later in Bhopal, Benazir Suraiya made an appeal to Muslims to go vegetarian on Eid at the legendary Taj-ul-Masajid, one of Asia’s largest mosques. Dressed in a green hijab, to highlight the importance of vegetarianism, she walked towards the mosque gates with a couple of PETA volunteers holding a placard in Urdu and English which read: “Make Eid Happy for All. Try Vegan”.
Within no time, local Muslim crowd gathered and started chanting angry slogans against PETA volunteers to vacate the place. With hardly a dozen Police deployed, the crowd became violent and started to abuse the female volunteers physically. While the other volunteers ran away leaving Benazir to fend for herself, Police too failed to protect Benazir from the angry crowd! Benazir was beaten up by her Muslim Kinfolks for daring to teach them Humanity! Later, Police whisked shaken Benazir to some undisclosed location.

As expected, no arrests were followed after this gruesome unrest against the peaceful appeal of PETA!

PETA has not repeated its act of professing Animal Love to Muslims on Eid-al Adha. If any solace, they have Hindus in India to attack without any fear of Confrontations from them! Hindus have been trained to be tolerant from centuries by Mughals, British and Politicians of Independent India ! Feel free!
PETA India sent a letter to the Chief Secretaries, the Directors General of Police, and the Directors of Animal Husbandry of state governments and union territories across India, as well as to Commissioners of Municipal Corporations of metro cities, requesting that they take all possible precautionary measures to stop the illegal transport and killing of animals in the lead-up to Bakrid, as was also advised by the Animal Welfare Board of India in its 15 July circular.
In its letter, PETA India pointed out that – through orders dated 17 February 2017 and 10 April 2017 on two matters regarding the sacrifice and killing of animals for meat – the Supreme Court of India ruled that animals can be slaughtered only in officially licenced slaughterhouses and that municipal authorities must ensure compliance with this ruling. The Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (Slaughter House) Rules, 2001, and the Food Safety and Standards (Licensing and Registration of Food Businesses) Regulations, 2011, permit the slaughter of animals for food only in registered or licenced slaughterhouses equipped with species-specific stunning equipment. The Food Safety and Standards (Food Products Standards and Food Additives) Regulations, 2011, also prohibit killing camels for meat, a prevalent practice during Bakrid. And the Transport of Animals Rules, 1978, establishes regulations that are also frequently violated during this festival.
Goats, buffaloes, camels, and other animals are killed during festivals such as Bakrid and Durga Puja. Common illegal practices during these holidays include cramming animals into severely crowded trucks – which routinely causes suffocation and broken bones – marching animals to the place of sacrifice, and breaking their tails and beating them to keep them moving. Then, they’re slaughtered by untrained workers who slit their throats with dull knives in full view of one another and often in front of traumatised and upset children who desire to protect the animals from harm.
